Once it has been decided that a patient requires radiotherapy, it is important that a plan is created which delivers the right dose directly to the tumour to destroy it most effectively, whilst minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Therefore an individual treatment plan, outlining the exact dose, timings and positioning for radiotherapy treatment will be created.
The plan is created using a CT scan of the tumour and treatment area. The 3D image which is created by the CT scan is then used by the dosimetry team and the oncologist, together with highly specialist computer technology, to calculate the dose required.
This CT ‘map’ is also used to plan exactly how the dose will be delivered by calculating and simulating the angle and number of radiation beams required.
