Robotic prostate surgery treatment
If the cancer is contained within the prostate, then surgery to remove the whole prostate gland can often completely cure prostate cancer. This is known as a radical prostatectomy, and it can be performed in a number of ways. The most accurate and advanced method available is robotic prostate surgery, using the Da Vinci ® System.
There are only a limited number of surgeons in the UK who are trained and experienced in this minimally invasive technique, and we are very pleased to have three of them in our team at The Prostate Practice. The da Vinci system allows our surgeons to perform extremely accurate laparoscopic surgery to remove the prostate through a number of small incisions in the abdomen.
This type of keyhole surgery can be performed without robotic assistance, but with the da Vinci system the surgeon’s hand movements are translated into smaller, more precise movements carried out by tiny instruments inside the patient's body. These instruments are steadier and more maneuverable than the human hand can possibly be.
The system also uses a 3D high definition camera, enabling the surgeon to operate with an enhanced vision for even greater precision.
Benefits of robotic surgery
- Greater accuracy in the removal of cancerous tissue.
- Less likelihood of nerve damage.
- Faster return to sexual function.
- Better return to urinary continence.
- Lower risk of complications.
- Less blood loss.
- Shorter hospital stay.
There are some other treatment options for cancer contained in the prostate, rather than surgery. These include radical advanced external beam radiotherapy, which aims to destroy the cancer completely, or brachytherapy.
Your consultant will discuss all the treatment options in detail with you before deciding the best route for you.
