GenesisCare’s new outpatient centre in Milton Keynes, which is set to open its doors to patients at the end of November, has taken delivery of a new Siemens CT scanner.
Named ‘Linford Wood Medical Centre’, it will provide the advanced external beam radiotherapy which has become the hallmark of GenesisCare. It will also offer a range of services from consultant appointments to multi-disciplinary specialist clinics – all supported by a diagnostic imaging suite where the Siemens Somatom scanner will be joined by an MRI scanner early next year.
GenesisCare’s chief executive, Steve Bird, explains: “We originally set out to develop an integrated cancer centre offering advanced cancer treatments similar to our other regional centres. However, we recognised that in this particular area, there is a demand for dedicated outpatient and diagnostic facilities, so made the move to develop a centre with comprehensive outpatient facilities suitable for all patients, not just those with symptoms of cancer.”
Linford Wood Centre’s general manager, Gill Barnes, adds: “The delivery of the CT scanner is quite a milestone as it marks the final phase of the development. The scanner has new single-click readiness technology which allows medical professionals more time with their patients and makes the whole scanning process more streamlined.”
The CT scanner will also work alongside the Elekta Versa HD, which is the most advanced radiotherapy treatment machine to become available in the UK. Together these machines will ensure cancer patients at the centre receive the very latest in external beam treatment. This will include intensity modulated technology (IMRT) combined with daily image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) which targets tumours with a very high degree of accuracy, avoiding damage to surrounding healthy tissue and organs thereby leading to improved outcomes and less expected side effects.
Milton Keynes consultant breast oncoplastic and general surgeon, Mr Kian Chin, said: "This new centre is great news for patients in the area. Although I expect to be working for many more years, I didn't think I would see a facility like this during that time. It is very exciting and impressive indeed."
Jackie Leaney, who provides support to consultants wanting to develop their practices, adds: “Linford Wood Centre is conveniently located with plenty of parking and will provide patients with a one-stop service including consultant appointments as well as any necessary tests.
“And this is just the start. We’re already being approached by doctors wanting to set up dedicated clinics such as a multi-disciplinary women’s health clinic and a prostate practice, and we’ll be working to develop any services needed by patients in the Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire region.”
