Cancer Partners UK has reason to celebrate this month having met a significant milestone. The company is celebrating its fifth anniversary, during which it has treated an impressive 3,750 patients, delivered 71,000 radiotherapy treatments and invested approximately £15.8m in new clinical technology for its patients across the UK.
The company which was established with the aim of improving the overall quality and availability of cancer services across the UK has been a trailblazer, particularly in radiotherapy technology, treatments and methods; setting standards for others to follow.
As well as delivering advanced cancer treatments, Cancer Partners UK recognised that there are significant benefits to patients being able to continue their life as normally as possible and takes every effort to fit treatments around their patients’ everyday lives.
In order to provide its patients with appropriate support and holistic care, last year it also developed a Living Well programme in a partnership with Penny Brohn Cancer Care.
The most recent innovation from GenesisCare UK is to build standalone outpatient medical centres. Here, patients can not only gain access to top quality radiotherapy treatment and chemotherapy but can also benefit from specialist clinics when they are first worried something is wrong.
Patients have access to leading and quick diagnostics, such as multiparametric MRI and the first Fuji Amulet Innovality digital mammography system in a private setting, all under one roof to help quickly and efficiently diagnose the best treatment.
Since opening its first centre in Portsmouth in September 2009, GenesisCare UK has increased its staff by 40 percent, and it has gone on to grow and build its partner network, whilst now also providing its own units on a standalone basis.
GenesisCare UK now has centres in Birmingham, Guildford, Elstree, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Oxford and Southampton.
Steve Bird is chief executive who oversees the company which was recognised in the latest The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100. He commented on the milestone:
“It’s been fantastic for the team to see our services grow both geographically and technologically over the years. With patients at the heart of our ethos, each of our centres offers differing services to suit each local need, a consistently high-quality service and our care offer much more of a holistic approach . We have further growth plans for the coming year and are excited about the prospect of opening further centres around the UK.
“The advances in technology over the last five years have made a marked improvement on treatments available, meaning that radiotherapy can be applied more accurately, faster and efficiently for patients.”
GenesisCare UK’s offering sets its centres at the forefront of cancer treatments. The company focuses on offering daily image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). These treatments allow for greater accuracy and minimises the side effects found with traditional methods of radiotherapy. Impressively, of the 71,000 fractions delivered to date, over 80 percent of patients have received IMRT.
GenesisCare UK delivers deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) techniques at all of its UK centres. As well as pushing the treatment area away from nearby vital organs, DIBH works by eliminating movement caused by breathing and therefore means a more precise area can be treated around the vital organs.
“Growth in awareness of cancer means that people are recognising symptoms to make an earlier diagnosis possible which, in many cases, means a far higher chance of returning to a normal life following treatment.
“What is most rewarding is seeing the success stories of those whose lives have been saved through our centres’ work up and down the country. We pride ourselves on delivering excellence in patient care and are very proud of our 98 per cent excellence in patient satisfaction.”
