Patient Organises Charity Golf Day

Cancer Treatment Patient Organises Gold Day

A patient who has been treated at GenesisCare in Nottingham is marking the end of her treatment by organising a charity golf day for Breast Cancer UK.

Forty-five year old Susan Conway was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2013, and had a lumpectomy and chemotherapy before she came to the Park Cancer Centre to be treated with advanced radiotherapy.

Susan explained: “Being diagnosed with breast cancer has been devastating and at times unbearable, but I've been lucky enough to have access to some fantastic treatment and am seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve had such great support – from my doctors and their teams, as well as friends, family and everyone at work. I thought having treatment would be worse, but I’ve not felt ill or had any side effects. I have been able to work full-time throughout my oncology treatment, which has helped keep life relatively normal, and boosted me emotionally.

“I wanted to do something positive and give something back to help other women with breast cancer, so organised the fundraising golf day and am asking everyone taking part to donate £10.”

The Charity Golf Day is being held at Ilkeston Golf Club on Saturday 14th June. It is open to individuals and local businesses, and has already attracted 35 players.

Susan, who is a manager with insurance company, CoverSure in Ilkeston, added: “I have two great bosses who’ve sponsored the event so I could get things off the ground. This means expenses such as the food and producing a programme have been covered, so every single penny raised will go straight to Breast Cancer UK.

“We thought it would be fun for the men taking part to dress up us women, although they don’t have to. Some will just be wearing something pink to get into the spirit of things! We’ll also be holding a raffle to raise more money – we’ve got some great prizes including a Pandora bracelet with a breast cancer charm.”

Susie McAllister, centre manager at GenesisCare in Nottingham, said: “It has been such a pleasure to treat Susan, whose positive approach is an inspiration. We’re thrilled to be supporting this charity golf event, and we hope everyone taking part has a fantastic day.”
